Needlepoint lace has been made in Primošten for centuries. It is a part of life of the local people. The skill was passed on from one generation to the next. Due to a rich lacemaking tradition and a great number of Lacemakers in Primošten, lace was produced for export on two occasions in the first half of the twentieth century. At the same time courses were held for beginners. Not long after the skill of traditional Primošten lacemaking was listed in the Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Croatia in 2009, the third lacemaking course was started.
In 2013, about twenty course participants formed the Association of Primošten Lacemakers “Pekljica” which has been active ever since. The Association is in charge of running the lacemaking course and is active in promoting lace. The members take part in exhibitions and festivals both in Croatia and abroad, hold lacemaking demonstrations, have published two books and several brochures on Primošten lace, and aside from many other achievements, have been holding lacemaking workshops in Primošten Primary School for years. In 2023 the Association was awarded the prize for exceptional contributions to tourism by the Tourist Board of the Šibenik-Knin County for original souvenirs. The main objective of the Association is to keep alive and promote the traditional skills they have inherited as cultural legacy from the hardworking Primošten women from the past.
